We are thrilled that containerised log exports to Vietnam, India and China are set to grow through a unique partnership between CentrePort, forestry exporter Zindia Forestry and log marshaller company Qube.

Premium New Zealand radiata logs in containers are now reaching overseas buyers who may not have access to the local infrastructure that supports traditional breakbulk shipments. Simply put, a smaller customer needs a smaller order, and containerisation is the best pathway to reach those customers.

It’s a more selective, ‘hand sold’ service, where the quality of the product can be tightly controlled, says Tina Thomas from Zindia Forestry.

“The supply chain can be monitored from the forest, to packing, and arrival at the buyer’s yard. These are niche markets, so it’s all about good relationships."

CentrePort's General Manager for Commercial and CentreConnect Andrew Locke FCILT says that CentrePort’s partnership with Zinda Forestry is critical, as New Zealand exporters look to open new markets and diversity their trade lanes.

“The development of new markets gives forest owners more options. There is no question China will remain New Zealand’s number one log export market for the foreseeable future. There is an on-going demand for New Zealand radiata, which international markets generally consider an industrial grade product. These new containerised exports to China, India and Vietnam will bring much needed stability to log exporters.”
